Different Methods to Playing the Violin

violin methods

This article has the main purpose of giving an overview on, in my opinion, the best violin methods available. I hope this information will be valuable in helping you decide witch one best suits your lifestyle. For now, this is a short review of my top 3 resources.

The Suzuki method

The Suzuki method was created over 100 years ago by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, a proeminent violinist and teacher. After trawling through music schools and a lot of published music, he created a method that has been practiced by hundreds of thousands of people ever since. This is a great method because it is known to be easy to learn. The ideas behind the Suzuki method are to:

  1. Promote learning through doing.
  2. Achieve a balance between sight reading and playing the violin.
  3. Create a definite technique based on practicing fluently as well as with great speed and accuracy.

Many people choose the Suzuki method because it provides a lot of freedom for them to learn at their own pace. They also know that if they don’t achieve 100% accuracy from their violin lessons, they may feel frustrated and won’t progress as quickly. Another great thing about this method is that it can really cater for your individual needs. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced player, there’s a Suzuki course for you!

The Strad method

I will probably need to apologize and say this: I love this method and I find it to be the best! The best part is that it’s easy! The method (I call it) was created by a Chinese master, master violinist, and teacher of all violinists. Over the years many people have been taught using this method. If you want to learn how to play violin, this is a great place to start. It’s not as structured diciplined as the Suzuki method, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as effective. It’s extremely inexpensive, takes less than a week to learn, and it’s easy to take along with you wherever you go.

What’s great about the Strad method is that it will teach you how to play violin in a truly effective way. I use this instructional material myself. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and this is the best way for me to learn. I’ve also read many books and been taught by many different methods. The main thing is that it works for me.

The Clark method

I first heard about this method when patio covers attached to house contractor was at my house and heard me playing the violin and told me about another method that he learned to play the violin with. This method has been taught and used by many different people and has a solid history. In simple and truthful words, the Clark method is “mostly all about the story.” The act of storytelling is a powerful thing. The Clark method helps you tell your story (I hope that helps). This method is a storyteller’s tool. As your teacher, you will receive instructions and guidance as to how your students should tell the story. This is an excellent story teller’s tool.

This method is a total of about 5 years worth of lessons. Do I think you will be able to tell a story within 5 years of this method? Probably not, but that’s not important. All I want you to know is that the method is a powerful tool for learning to play violin and that it works for me and for a lot of other people. Why not choose a method that works for you? Your practice costs money, but if you’re really serious about learning to play violin, I think you owe it to yourself to give the method a fair chance.

Watch Out For Online Violin Lessons

Now you’re probably wondering if online violin lessons are any good. I’m going to have to shoot you down here. They are not. The absolute worst thing you can do with violins is pay for instruction from someone who has never played, or hasn’t spent time actually playing, or doesn’t have the complete knowledge of the violin. Online violin lessons are a joke.
